A Chinese court in Shenzhen Yantian District today sentenced 10 Hong Kong democracy activists to three years imprisonment. The other two minors of the group will be returned to Hong Kong after they admitted wrongdoing. The activists were caught in August as they made a rare attempt to escape Hong Kong by speedboat to Taiwan.
The case has drawn global attention and concern about the detainees’ treatment in view of a harsh new security law introduced by Beijing in June. It has triggered widespread criticism at a time of growing fears about the semi-autonomous territory’s evaporating freedoms.
