Meditation is one way through which you can find inner peace, calm your mind, de-stress, reenergize and take out some time to self-reflect. More often than not, meditation is also complemented with various mudra that works on various physical and mental aspects.

While meditation often requires you to sit in a comfortable position and away from physical distractions, you will find yourself distracted from your thoughts. To counter these mental distractions, you can take the help of various yoga mudras.

Yoga mudras are hand mudras or gestures that channel the energy flow basis the placement of the fingers. These mudras can be performed for either 45 minutes at a stretch or broken into 3 times for 15 minutes.

This is because each of the five fingers represents one of the five basic elements-space, air, fire, water, and earth. And the prolonged practice of the mudras can create an imbalance in the doshas.

In this article, we have listed 5 effective mudras that will assist in your meditative practice by improving concentration.

1. Gyan Mudra

The Gyan mudra is known as the mudra of wisdom and knowledge. It is one of the most common mudras practised during meditation, pranayama, and yoga asanas. Also known as Chin Mudra, it helps the body relax and improve concentration.

The Gyan mudra can be performed by joining the tips of the index finger and the thumb. The rest of the fingers are kept straight yet relaxed.

Here the index finger represents the soul of the practitioner and the thumb is the supreme soul. Thus, it also helps the practitioner unify with the higher realms in the universe.

2. Dhyana Mudra

You will often find Lord Buddha statues depicting him in a meditative state while performing this mudra. The Dhyana Mudra, as the name suggests, helps you establish a profound level of concentration. This hand mudra also brings inner peace and calmness to the mind.

You can practice the Dhyana Mudra by placing the right hand on top of the left hand and joining the thumbs at the tips. The right hand signifies enlightenment and spirituality which will curb the world of illusion or maya, as depicted by the left hand.

During meditation, you can form this mudra and place your hands on the lap, with palms facing upwards.

3. Hakini Mudra

The hakini mudra is considered to be one of the best mudras for concentration and improving memory. It is known to activate the third eye chakra, which is the seat for concentration. The mudra enhances brain power by stimulating the right hemisphere of the brain, that stores memory. It is also effective in balancing the right and left hemispheres of the brain.

To practice Hakini mudra, spread the fingers apart and place your palms facing each other. Join the tips of all the fingers keeping the palms separated. You can place your hands in front of the forehead with the thumb touching the centre of the forehead.

You must have seen people unconsciously doing this mudra when they are focused on some work, trying to remember some things, or listening to someone attentively.

4. Buddhi Mudra

The buddhi mudra is known to provide mental clarity, improve internal communication and develop psychic abilities. It can also be used to improve concentration during meditation as by promoting mental clarity, your mind gets rid of unwanted and negative thoughts.

It helps in removing distractions and connecting you with yourself and also to the higher consciousness.

Practice this mudra by joining the tip of the little finger to the thumb. The rest of the fingers stay straight and relaxed.

5. Shoonya Mudra

The word “shoonya” means “emptiness” or “spaciousness”. This mudra is most often used for spiritual awakening. It reduces mental stress, enhances intuitive abilities, and fosters alertness.

It also increases blood circulation, strengthens willpower, and reduces stress.

The shoonya mudra can be practiced by joining the tips of the middle finger and the thumb. The rest of the fingers stay straight and relaxed.
