India is now a Vice Chair of the Steering Committee for Global Methane Initiative (GMI) for the year 2021-2023.
India is the founder member among 45 partner countries of GMl. Now India will work more closely together with other countries to mitigate methane emissions in coming years.
Vinod Kumar Tiwari, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal will represent as Vice Chair for India and Chairman cum Managing Director, Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDI) will be the member of the Steering Committee and Co-chair of Coal Subcommittee.
HoD Clean Energy Department, CMPDI will be the Alternate delegate. Canada is the Chair of the Steering Committee and US is likely to be another Vice Chair of the committee.
GMI is an international public-private partnership focused on reducing barriers to the recovery and use of methane as a clean energy source.
The initiative provides technical support to deploy methane-to-energy projects around the world as well as information resources through its extensive online library featuring best practices, technical tools and resources, and more.
To support this effort, GMI collaborates with its Partner Countries and more than 700 Project Network members to exchange information and technical resources to advance methane mitigation in three key sectors: Oil & Gas, Biogas, and Coal Mines. Additionally, GMI works with other international organizations focused on methane recovery and use, including the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and the Energy Agency (IEA).
CMPDI is the Principal Implementing Agency for the development of CBM and CMM in leasehold areas of Coal India Ltd and its subsidiaries. Recently three CBM blocks have been auctioned to develop through CBM Developer.
CBM Developer has been selected for the development of Jharia CBM Block I in BCCL leasehold areas. Coal Mine Methane Drainage demonstration project has also been approved for Moonidih UG Mine.
