The excitement was palpable as the IRSM WR-II Football Tournament 2025 commenced with a spectacular opening ceremony at Mansarovar Stadium, NTPC Korba. Set to run from March 8 to March 12, 2025, the tournament brings together four dynamic teams—Korba, Sipat, Lara, and Khargone—promising an electrifying showcase of skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
The grand inauguration was led by Shri Rajeev Khanna, Executive Director, NTPC Korba, in the esteemed presence of GM (O&M) Shri Bibhas Ghatak and GM (Maintenance & Ash Dyke Management) Shri Manish Vasant Sathe. Adding grace to the occasion, Smt. Roli Khanna, President of Maitri Mahila Samiti, attended as the Special Guest of Honor. The guests were given a warm and traditional welcome, with a troop of Karma dancers escorting them to the ground, followed by schoolchildren.
The dignitaries clicked pictures at the attractive Selfie Point and were greeted with planters, IRSM badges, and Angvastrams, setting a vibrant tone for the tournament.
All four participating teams lined up on the field were honored with the prestigious Kosa Angvastra, symbolizing NTPC’s deep-rooted respect for sportsmanship and tradition. The event reached a defining moment when the official tournament logo, mascot “Nandi,” and the Winner’s Trophy were unveiled by ED Korba.
The mascot, Nandi—also known as the Indian Bull or “Gaur”—is Chhattisgarh’s state animal and is on the verge of extinction, making its selection a powerful tribute to resilience and strength.
Leadership Speaks: A Celebration of Sportsmanship and Team Spirit
Addressing the gathering, Shri Rajeev Khanna expressed his pride and enthusiasm:
“Football is a game of passion, strategy, and endurance. It teaches us teamwork, resilience, and the ability to push beyond limits—qualities that align perfectly with NTPC’s work culture. Just as we collaborate to generate power and drive national progress, today, we stand together to celebrate the power of sports and friendly competition.
This tournament brings together four formidable teams—Sipat, Lara, Khargone, and our very own Korba. Each of you not only represents your respective projects but also embodies NTPC’s unwavering spirit of dedication and excellence. I am confident that we will witness thrilling matches, exceptional performances, and, most importantly, sportsmanship that will make us all proud.
To all the players, my message is simple: Give your best, play fair, and enjoy the game. Winning is not just about the final score; it is about the experiences, friendships, and memories you create along the way.”
A Grand Opening Ceremony Sets the Stage
The inaugural event featured a march-past by all teams and contingents, followed by a spectacular torch-lighting ceremony where the captains of all four teams lit the ceremonial torch, signifying the commencement of the tournament.
A Fair Play Pledge and Fitness Pledge were administered by Shri Khanna, emphasizing the importance of integrity and well-being in sports. The ceremony culminated with a symbolic balloon release, marking the official launch of the sports event.
Before the first match began, an awe-inspiring Kalaripayattu performance was showcased to boost the morale of the players. The traditional martial art, known for its agility and precision, enthralled the audience and set an energetic tone for the tournament.
As a fitting conclusion to the grand opening, ED Korba, along with the GMs, stepped onto the pitch to conduct the first kick-off, reinforcing the spirit of fair play and competitive enthusiasm.
The event witnessed an overwhelming presence of General Managers, Maitri Mahila Samiti members, Sports Council representatives, union and association members, welfare bodies, departmental heads, and NTPC employees, all coming together to celebrate this sporting spectacle.
Following the coin toss, the first match between Korba and Sipat commenced, delivering a gripping contest that ultimately saw Korba emerge victorious.
