“India is extremely proud of what you have achieved!” These are the words of Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur when Lovlina Borgohain brought pride to India by winning the Bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The champion now eyes the 2024 Olympics Gold Medal for India.

Lovlina: The Tokyo Hero

Lovlina was honored with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award 2021 for all her achievements. This includes the Bronze medal win at Tokyo Olympics, 2020, and the Bronze medal at AIBA World Women Boxing Championship, 2019. The Arjuna Awardee not only won the medal but her win has also brought a wave of positivity for India’s emerging and young boxers.

Lovlina had seen bittersweet days before becoming the champion she is today. Her village, Baro Mukhia now has a motorable cycle pakka road, and pipeline for water (in progress) under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Further, the state government will set up a sports complex at Naharbari which is 2 km away from her home, work for which will begin this year. Her win brought infrastructural changes to the village.
