SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) is making significant strides in enhancing its steel-making capacity with the commissioning of new facilities, including the installation of the 4th Slab Caster and Ladle Furnace along with associated infrastructure at Steel Melting Shop-II Department.
The ongoing project work is being executed by a consortium consisting of Messers SMS India Private Limited, New Delhi, and Messers SMS group GmbH, Germany, and is progressing rapidly. These advancements are part of the strategic initiatives of the Steel Plant to boost productivity and efficiency in steel production. Centre for Engineering and Technology (CET), Ranchi is the Consultant of the project scheduled to be completed by May, 2025.
The Project is being executed by the Projects Department under the leadership of Mr. Atanu Bhowmick, Director In-Charge, RSP and Mr. Tarun Misra, ED (HR) with the additional charge of ED (Projects). Mr. T P Shivshankar, CGM, SMS-II is the Project Owner while Mr. P.Prasanth Kumar, GM (Projects) is the Project Manager.
As of June 2024, more than 50% of the physical work for the 4th Slab Caster and Ladle Furnace project has been completed. Major operational accomplishments of the project include the relocation of the PC Room, re-routing of gable end utility pipelines, installation of a new 5T cantilever crane in KL Bay, completion of the emergency overhead water tank, new booster pump house, bulk oil storage room, office and store buildings, ACVS building, a new 100/10T EOT crane in KL Bay, and relocation of tundish maintenance facilities.
Civil works for new caster and ladle furnace foundations, water treatment plants, electrical buildings, and MSRS building are in full swing, while structural erection for the main building shed, MSRS building, roof legs, and pipe bridges is progressing rapidly. Electrical work, including transformer erection, cable laying through micro-tunnelling, earth pit and earthing work, cable tray erection, and cable laying, is moving swiftly.
Also, the laying of utility and media pipelines along the columns of the extended building shed is underway, with strict adherence to the ZERO accident policy of RSP and all safety norms, overcoming the complexities and challenges inherent in the brown field nature of the project.
