SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has been conferred with the prestigious Platinum award in Global Environment Award 2024 at Global Clean Energy Summit 2024 held at New Delhi on 20th March 2024.
V V R Murty, GM (Environment Engineering) and Mr. Anubinda Mohanty, GM (Business Excellence) received the award on behalf of RSP.
It is worth mentioning here that, RSP participated in the competition for the first time, and won the highest award, i.e the Platinum award. The award came as a recognition of RSP’s excelling endeavour in Environment Management in every aspect.
It is noteworthy that RSP has been adopting state-of-the-art environment friendly steel making technologies, progressively, since inception. The comprehensive Air Pollution Control measures implemented by RSP include the installation of Multi-Cyclones, Wet Scrubbers, Bag Houses, Electrostatic Precipitators, and Dry Fog Dust Suppression Systems.
The plant maintains sophisticated systems for monitoring and controlling emissions, such as Online Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Systems and Online Continuous Stack Emission Monitoring Systems. Also, dedicated Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP) are strategically placed throughout the units, ensuring the recycling of treated water back into the production process.
RSP also adheres to stringent monitoring and control standards through Online Effluent Quality Monitoring Systems (EQMS), with all online monitoring systems seamlessly integrated with the servers of both State Pollution Control Board and the Central Pollution Control Board.
Continuing its commitment to environmental stewardship, RSP is actively pursuing an ambitious Zero Liquid Discharge project. The implementation of waste gas recovery systems has enabled the generation of green power, with initiatives such as the Top Recovery Turbo Generator of Blast Furnaces #5, Back Pressure Turbo Generator in CDCP of Coke Oven Battery #6, and Power generation in PBS utilizing waste gases of Blast Furnace #5, alongside Captive Power generation utilizing waste gases from Blast Furnaces, Coke Ovens, and Steel Melting Shop #2. On the solid waste management front, RSP has embraced the 4R i.e. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover principle with a primary focus on reducing basic raw material consumption at its source.
This strategic approach not only minimizes resource usage but also safeguards the environment from the harmful impacts associated with waste dumping.
In a bid to enhance green cover, RSP has undertaken extensive afforestation efforts, having planted about 52 lakh trees and developed 40 picturesque gardens and parks within both the steel plant premises and the steel township.
