Sensex, Nifty witness losses of over 1% amid mixed global cues

The Sensex and the Nifty on Friday witnessed losses of more than one percent  amid mixed global cues.

The Sensex and the Nifty on Friday witnessed losses of more than one percent  amid mixed global cues. Sensex declined to trade near 59,300 while the Nifty ended below 17,700 level.

The BSE Sensex tumbled 678 points, or 1.13 percent, to trade at 59,307. The NSE Nifty also plunged 186 points, or 1.04 percent, to trade at 17,672.

Amongst global stock markets, Shares in Asia-Pacific were mixed. China’s Shanghai Composite index gained 0.8 percent and Japan’s NIKKEI-225 climbed 0.3 percent. On the other hand, South Korea’s KOSPI declined 1.3 percent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.7 percent and Singapore’s Straits Times slipped 0.2 percent. European markets were down in intra-day trade.

Oil rose further above 84 dollars barrel on expectations that OPEC and its allies will keep supply tight countering rising U.S. inventories and the prospect of more Iranian exports. In intra-day trade, Brent crude was trading around 84 dollars and 30 cents per barrel.

Gold prices declined 220 rupees at Multi Commodity Exchange for December contracts. The precious metal was trading at 47,740, rupees per 10 gram in intra-day trade. Silver plunged 470 rupees to 64,460 rupees per kilogram for December Contracts when reports last came in.

In the forex market, the rupee appreciated four paise to trade at 74 rupees and 88 paise against the US dollar.
